Assignments

Scales quiz

Scales: Major Pentatonic scale and Moveable Major scale.
Due date: September 21-25/2020
  • Play the major pentatonic scale in whatever position you want. Play two octaves, across the fretboard. Tell me what note you are starting on.
  • Play the movable major scale, starting on the second finger. Choose your position, but again, tell me what note you are starting on. IT MUST BE DIFFERENT FROM THE PENTATONIC SCALE.
  • The diagrams below are the two scales. The first one is the major pentatonic scale (sometimes called A minor pentatonic scale in 2nd position), and the major scale is the second pattern.
  • Practice these scales, and when you are ready, record these scales and submit them on Teams.

Grade 11/12 Guitar (MUS30/40F)

Assignment hand in

Any assignments that you will need to hand in can be uploaded using Teams. Log in to Teams, and submit the assignment or recording in your classroom.
This class is a grade 11 and 12 combined class, and we'll be working with the ideas for extended techniques and ensemble work. Each player will be more important in the ensemble, and each will have a role to play to make the whole ensemble sound better.
We work on guitar ensemble and performance ideas a lot more, as well as music theory and music composition, so you can express yourself with writing your own music as well as learning and playing other songs.

Guitar Lesson Resource-  www.justinguitar.com

Theory Resource-   Breezin Thru Theory   https://breezinthru.com/login/

 Scales Resource- www.fretastic.com

Hey guitar players! Here is a new online resource that we will be starting to use. The website is called Justin Guitar. The maker of this website is a very good guitar teacher from Great Britain, Justin Sandercoe. He has a lot of lessons, songs, and other resources we can use. Go to www.justinguitar.com, and create your own account for free. This will give you access to the lessons and songs that are on the free part of his website. The lessons are ordered by level of difficulty, so you can start with lessons in the beginner level if you are newer to guitar, or go to the intermediate level or higher if you feel comfortable with that.

I encourage you to go through the beginner lessons to get anything you may have not learned in the past! That way we will all learn together!

When you sign up, you also will have the ability to keep track of your progress with your DASHBOARD. This will list the things you have gone over, and you can keep track of your progress. You can even put into your dashboard goals and things you want to work on! It is a great resource for you!
Our theory "textbook" we are using this year is the website, Breezin' Thru Theory. It is an interactive theory resource that you will be able to use at home to learn musical theory concepts. I will give you your login and password. When you first login, you will change your password to whatever you want. Make sure you don't forget it! (IF you do, come see me and I can reset it).
First lessons are Chapter 1
This is a website/app that will help you to learn your scales! It is a great resource to visualize the scales, as well as be able to find how to play them on different parts of your fretboard.
You can choose the scale, which part of the fretboard to play it on, and be able to see the scale written out on the fretboard in several different ways. You can hear the scale played,  adjust the display of the scale to show the names of the notes or the degrees of the scale (1, 2, 3, etc.). You can also play around on the scale with a backing track, so you can learn to improvise on the scale! This site shows you how to play dozens of types of scales, starting on any note (not just major and minor)! It's a great resource for learning your fretboard! Try it out!

Sign up for a free account to be able to use it. It's free!

Meetings/Videos to you

If I need to schedule a class, or show you a video, I will probably do so on YouTube or Zoom. I'm learning to figure out how it works, so when I can do so, I will let you know what you need to do to watch those videos.
